  • How the Brain Learns: Cognitive Study Skills to Hack Your Brain & Learn Anything

Did you know that the human brain forgets 50% of what it learns within just 24 hours? Find out how the brain learns—and fails to learn—in this fascinating class, and learn how you can harness the power of your own brain to study for any test, from high school to college and beyond.

This program can be adjusted to meet differing needs; it has been run as a 1.5-hour class, as well as a 5-day virtual "summer camp" before.

  • Get Ready for High School Writing

This program is designed to bridge the gap between middle school writing and the rigorous demands of high school essays. Targeted at 8th grade, this course aims to equip students with a robust toolkit of 5-paragraph essay structures and brainstorming strategies to avoid writer’s block and make essay-writing easy.

The short version lasts two hours. The full, comprehensive course consists of six hours in class plus additional homework/study hall assignments.

  • SSAT Standardized Test Prep

Get ready for the challenging Upper Level SSAT with this course. Students will learn key strategies for conquering analogies, vocabulary, and math problems. In addition, students will learn the science behind test anxiety and practice research-backed strategies to beat anxiety and enter the test feeling calm and centered.

The short version lasts two hours. The full, comprehensive course includes an additional 1.5-hour session to work on practice tests together in order to apply what the students learned in the first session.

  • Analytical Reading: Imagery and Author's Word Choice

In this class, we delve into short works to explore and analyze the nuances of language, with a focus on sensory details and imagery. Students are encouraged to share their favorite parts of each sentence, leading to lively discussions about the impact of word choice, imagery, and sentence structure. Finally, students try their hand at the Sensory Detail Writing Challenge. This engaging class enhances critical thinking and analytical skills, preparing students for the complexities of high school ELA.

One full class lasts 1 hour. In the past, I have run this class as a weekly 30-minute “reading club.” I would be happy to train a volunteer to run it as a regular after-school or lunchtime club.

  • Creative Writing Club: Skill-Building through Play

After helping hundreds of high school students improve their writing skills for high school and college, I have identified specific skills that many students struggle with. Based on those skills that are most essential for success in high school, college, and standardized tests, I have developed a unique “curriculum” of creative writing games. Through repeating these creative writing games and exercises regularly, students enhance their ability to express their ideas effectively and avoid the dreaded writer’s block, instead learning to love writing.

These games are most effective when repeated regularly. This program works well as a daily or weekly writing club that meets for 30-60 minutes per session. I would be happy to train volunteers to facilitate the writing games.

  • SAT/ACT Prep, SAT Parent Q&A, and SAT Teacher PD

Prepare for the new Digital SAT with our SAT/ACT Prep, led by a seasoned test prep professional and member of the National Test Prep Association. Both my Teacher PD and my student SAT Prep course offer an in-depth exploration of the new digital SAT, which presents unique challenges and differs significantly from its predecessor. I taught the new SAT internationally a year before its release in the US to top students applying to (and enrolling in) Ivy League universities.

There are many myths about the new SAT, and the testing strategy and skills are very different, so old strategies and old books are no longer useful, so it is very important to prep correctly.

For Teacher PD, I have taught 1.5 hours per department. For parents, it is a 30-minute talk and Q&A session.

For students, the setup is flexible. A 1-2-week boot camp program in the weeks leading up to the August test is popular over the summer. However, I've done all kinds, from a 90-minute SAT/ACT crash course to a 200-hour summer boot camp for students to truly learn all the ins and outs. We can figure out what works for your organization and students based on budget and other considerations.

  • The College Application Essay: Write an Exceptional Personal Statement

With the application essay more important than ever, how can you make your personal statement stand out? In this workshop, participants will learn how to avoid common mistakes and practice using “showing” instead of “telling” to add rich imagery to their application essays.

Whether you already have a completed draft or have no idea what to write about, this class will help you write an exceptional personal statement.

    This class lasts two hours.
