Description
Get Ready for High School Group Class – Summer 2023
6 hours per week. Learn in a small group of 2-8 students.
Choose from three locations:
- Voorhees, New Jersey
- Wilmington, Delaware
- Online
Can’t make it in-person each week? Students can mix and match to create a hybrid program.
Week 1: Brain-Based Study Skills
Did you know that the human brain forgets up to 50% of what it learned after just 24 hours? Find out how the brain learns – and fails to learn – in this exciting class. Students will gain experience using research-backed study strategies, both online (apps and websites) and old-fashioned pen-and-paper (specially constructed study guides).
Week 2: Think Like a Scientist
Fact: The amount of mozzarella cheese consumed in America correlates with number of engineering PhDs. Does that mean that eating lots of cheese will earn you a PhD?
If you like asking lots of questions, this class is for you. This class will focus on the importance of asking questions and exploring their answers, from the serious to the silly! How can you tell if scientific results are legitimate or not? Students will read and discuss articles about all kinds of scientific discoveries, learning about the scientific method and statistical thinking in the process.
Week 3: Writing A+ Essays
Essays are everywhere in high school, but they don’t need to be scary. Students will practice outlining and writing multiple types of essays. These essay structures will be useful in many high school classes, including Language Arts, History, some Science classes, and especially on AP tests. In addition, students will learn to edit their own writing.
Previous students have come back and reported: “I thought Honors History would be hard, but all I had to do was write an essay on the causes of the Civil War. Just outline it and write! Easy!”
Week 4: Understanding Literature
What do Shakespearean plays, Harry Potter, and Cars 2 all have in common?
Literary symbols!
Through engaging class discussions, reading, and writing, students will come to see their favorite works in a new light while building essential analytical skills.
Week 5: Creative Writing
Write the next great American short story, share a poignant memory, or tell the world about the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you. The choice is yours!
From brainstorming to sensory detail challenges to fun writing games, this class will help you bring out the best in your story.
